SIA sees chip sales down 2.2% in June SAN JOSE -- Global chip sales were down again last month, according to the latest survey from the Semiconductor Industry Association here. The trade group said today that worldwide semiconductor sales fell 2.2% from May to June, to reach $$9.84 billion. Last month's total also represented a 14.1% plummet from June 1997. "The instability of the Asian economies continued to take its toll on global chip sales in June," said SIA president George Scalise. "However, Asia's problems had very little impact on sales in the Americas market, which remains the strongest semiconductor market in the world." Sales figures were down in all regional markets, although the Americas and Europe were the stronger areas, with declines of only 0.3% and 1.9%, respectively. Not surprisingly, the Asia-Pacific market had the biggest drop, of 3.7%, and Japan was a close second with a 3.6% fall-off. Oversupply in several key market segments, especially DRAMs, continues to plague the industry. The weakened Asian economies, with devalued currencies and lower buying power, have also contributed to the declines. Many analysts are saying this year's slump might be the worst ever, and the SIA is predicting the 1998 chip market will shrink by nearly 2% from last year (see June 3 story). While some analysts have suggested the second quarter will turn out to be the bottom of the downturn and the market may see some recovery by early next year, opinions are mixed and many observers do not see light at the end of the tunnel until at least the second quarter of 1999.
