Only companies in the Standard & Poor's 500 share index
included in data. Earnings-per-share growth in second quarter
expected between 3 percent and 5 percent when traditional
positive bias included. The positive bias has averaged about
2.5 percent in last four years.
Positive and negative surprises differ from positive and
negative reports in that the former include those who deviated
from expectations by at least 5 percent (with adjustments when
the numbers are near zero and their percentage difference
becomes meaningless).
