Gov't provides NDFB $4M for productive small
loans

The National Development Foundation of Belize this week announced that it has
received BZ$4 million which it has put into a revolving Small Credit Fund to assist
micro, small and medium size enterprises with development loans.

The revolving fund is being financed by the Government of Belize under the
Republic of China's (Taiwan) development initiative which extends to all the
countries of Central America.

Later the NDFB expects to benefit even more when the bulk of the Taiwan funds -
$20 million, comes on stream.

An announcement from the NDFB this week states: "The GOB revolving Small
Credit Fund will not only meaningfully affect employment, but will also save, expand
and create business activities. The Fund will also affect in a meaningful way home
improvement and small sector housing as well as educational pursuits from ABC to
UCB and other special pursuits for improved social well-being.

NDFB will administer the funds on behalf of the Government of Belize for a fee.
NDFB's responsibility in the matter will be to make sure that all requests for loans
show evidence of viability and ability to repay the loan and have adequate
collateral. The other criteria is that the development loans contribute to national
development and social well being.

Mr. Manuel Cuellar, managing director of NDFB, has called the collaboration
between the foundation and the Government of Belize "monumentally historical by
any measurable standard. The collaboration wisely combines appropriate
institutional resources with adequate public financial investment to create and sustain
high levels of employment to meaningfully strengthen the economy".

"The collaboration especially demonstrates the highest display of respect and
confidence by GOB for a private, non-government institution, such as the NDFB
placing the national good above all other interests", Cuellar said.
