I agree with most of your synopsis on the game industry. However, upon consideration of your analogy vis a vis the movie industry, I couldn't help remembering that 1997's top category winners at the Oscars came at the expense of big studios. The independents all but swept the major categories. At some point the public does recognize crap if you keep sticking their nose in it. At some point even the big players will have to recognize that it is far more beneficial to cut your losses and concentrate on quality over quantity. Not to mention that various spin-offs do originate to challenge a mediocre standing. DreamWorks is a perfect example of this in the movie industry. Maybe the Gaggle Of Developers (G.O.D for short) will set this example in the game industry. At some time competition always overruns the mediocre and requires them to raise their standards.
