"Will Dell survive, probably. They are raising lots of cash right now. What will be interesting is what they actually do with this capital."

You mean buy a huge company like DEC and watch their stock plummet as impatient investors sell to make a quick profit elsewhere? Let's face it, the people who keep knocking Compaq are the people who want a quick buck NOW, not tomorrow...but I think most Compaq longs are in here knowing full well the rewards that we'll be getting in the next couple of years...Yes I wish I had bought Dell early this year when it was in the $20's...but right now I'm more than happy to be holding Compaq because while Dell is very much overpriced, Compaq is very much underpriced :)

Check out what Lo(u)d wrote on the Dell thread:

Let them come boast about they're return from the sh*t-can. We've never had to swim in that crap, and never will. We can't relate...

I've read horror novels that began this way...

Rob Rob,
Nice post, pretty much the way I see it also. Not sure I understand LONGonDELL's comment about IBM's multiple - does he think it too high or low?? Don't know how many folks have been tracking IBM from it's lows, but it's pretty close to a 7 bagger since Gerstner came on board. I'm amazed at how 'confident' the Dell board is, it kind of reminds me of a bunch of IBM execs I was listening to back in the early 1980's. They were talking about how IBM would be a 100B corporation in five years, and were building new plants left and right. Confidence was everywhere!!! The other day the Dell thread's cheerleader posted that he thought another 450 points were in store for Dell by 2001!!! That is a market cap getting close to 400 billion... Even the best companies trip up - look at Intel, in addition to CPQ. Maybe I've been around too long and seen too many high fliers tank, time will tell....

John

Rudedog, you're not correct about the DELL Dimension and OptiPlex lines. The Dimension is the power-based/stand alone unit, and the OptiPlex is the network-ready PC. I don't know enough about Compaq's PC lines to be sure that my comparisons are accurate, and I've never questioned the quality of their product.

My problem, again, lies with the business model. That's why (primarily) I don't like CPQ as much as DELL.

Regards,

LoD
