OK, this is NOT a rumor, just my speculation: WCOM should buy QWST. Maybe they don't have cash. If I were QWST, I would play hard to get and hold out for at least $100 a share (now around $40) if not more. But, nonetheless, WCOM should buy QWST. hi capacity, data-voice-video bandwidth is THE GAME in the next few years. WCOM recognizes this, as evidenced by the business backbone it is putting together in Europe-NE USA (my recollection of a few recent press releases). BUT: the demand for this will grow. QWST has built the hi capacity network... and they will come. See wired.com for a good Wired article on QWST strategy, etc.

Effect of Merger Approval? Many on this thread have said that they expect the merger to get final federal approval this month. (Do the states still need to give independent approval?) What effect will this have on the stock price: a. in a continued market downtrend? b. in a market uptrend? c. in a neutral market? I get the sense that the final approval of the merger is already priced into WCOM. But, perhaps the approval will allow WCOM to make some announcements which have been suppressed due to the pending merger?
