Interesting article on the status of the SAN, importance of management software, etc:

techweb.com

<<To an extent, the pieces are already here-Fibre Channel switches and hubs that actually connect the devices in SANs, for example, are growing in popularity as prices rapidly decline (see chart). Fibre Channel SANs promise not only single sources of server-independent data for everyone in a company, but also improved performance: Taking loads off the server should make applications run better. Allocating disparate applications, such as data warehousing, accounts receivable, and even video processing, to dedicated storage makes for faster, more complete retrieval of information>>

Roy and everyone,

The G2 site is an interesting one with a good focal collection of FC links and references. The book references are unique. There is a link where you can download the latest book from the FCA in pdf.

As an added bonus, there is also a picture of Roy.

Roy,

Does G2's 2x5 hub suports the intermix of private and public loops? Would it also allow private loop devices participate in public loop functions(i.e. be able to participate in fabric switching)? May be G2 and Ancor can work together. Thanks.

KJ

Roy,

You wrote:

Cost of developing the switch aside, roughly how long would it take to develop a comparable switch and associated firmware and software?

Thanks,

Steve

Roy,

Thanks for the links regarding G2's funding and technical information. I found this quote from the funding story interesting:

<<"The financing helps us develop and market low-cost, ultra-high-speed Fibre Channel hubs, adapters and switches for cluster network environments.">>

Does this mean that G2 currently has a Fibre Channel switch under development?

<<There continues to be serious interest in Fibre Channel from large companies, and I continue to believe it's a matter of when rather than if.>>

Any idea how long? I've been involved with Fibre Channel and Ancor for about three years, and I'm getting tired of getting shot at by the bears. <g>

Your web site was quite interesting. G2's approach of embracing both Gigabit Ethernet and Fibre Channel appears to be unique. (Most companies do one or the other.) Is this a recognition that Gigabit Ethernet will eventually become the dominant technology on the LAN side, or is there another reason that I'm missing?

I was also a little bit surprised at your clustering focus. I have LONG thought that Fibre Channel was a natural for clustering, but nobody seems to be making much noise about it.

Roy,
What is it about the Ancor switch, or the Company and its' personnel, that makes is vulnerable to competition, whether that competition comes from G@, Brocade or McData?
