Paul... probably hardwired modems will always be faster and easier to alter if new technology comes along, but the POTS type modem seems to have reached a stage where the speed possibilities and design are static. This, coupled with the speed of the new crop of microprocessors means that it is now a good candidate for built in design.
I read elsewhere that the home PC penetration in the US hasn't changed much since the price declines. If correct, this may mean that a majority of Americans don't want or don't need a computer, even if it costs less than $1000. Maybe the price level to attract a lot of new home customers is much lower,in the range of the cost of a TV. Or maybe there just hasn't been enough time to change the figures yet.
