Considering sector-wide earnings disappointments for the semiconductor industry over the past several months, some may be wondering when the profit outlook might improve. During this same time period, we have noted a distinct shift in the insider profile at Intel Corp., as executives who held on to their shares when the stock climbed to all time highs, started selling shares at prices off the highs in the fall of '97. In fact, their changed sentiment appeared prophetic-while at each low investors wondered if the stock was at a bargain level, insiders sold on each rally, and the shares
dropped lower following each round of sales. Shares of Intel have recently rallied from $66 lows to as high as $87, and continuing their trend of late, recent 144 intentions indicate that executives are again poised to take profits on a rally. From July 16 to July 28, eight executives filed their intention to sell 473,800 shares at prices ranging from $83-$86 per share. In what would mark his largest disposition since '96, Director & Chairman Emeritus Gordon Moore, co-founder of the company, filed to sell 250,000
shares. Director Charles Young revealed his intention to sell 10,000
shares-a potential 30% decrease in his actionable position (common stock plus exercisable options). Director Emeritus Max Palevsky, who caught the top in August '97 at $100, planned sales for 23,800 shares. EVP, GM, Technology & Manufacturing Group Gerhard Parker, who demonstrated excellent timing in July '97 by selling shares at $89, filed to sell 40,000 shares. SVP, GM, Microprocessor Products Group Albert Yu planned sales for 10,000 shares-on the heels of his well-timed April sales at $78-$84 per share. VP & CFO Andy Bryant, who also sold shares in April at $81, revealed his intention to sell
20,000 shares. Finally, Director David Yoffie, who has been on the Board since '89, filed to sell 100,000 shares. This sale would mark Mr. Yoffie's first ever, and would result in a 45% decrease in his actionable position. Perhaps these intended sales reflect worries about the condition of the broader market rather than solely company specific issues.
