Chuzz-

(I am reposting for those new to the thread)...

One of the first things that CEO Joel Kirschner of Micron did (after he became CEO six weeks ago) was announce that Micron will no longer be competing against Dell in large corporate markets......Kirschner previously had worked at Dell (and, subsequently, a stint at a software company) before becoming CEO at Micron...

Now, this is a guy who is intimately familiar with Dell's model, is head of a company who ALSO HAS a direct model in place and functioning, and not only is afraid to compete with Dell, but refuses to do so! One would think that his background (and the company's organization) would put him in the BEST position to transform Micron, and take away (or at least nibble at) some of the business that Dell is currently winning....After all, as Dell's critics love to state, the B-T-O, J-I-T model is easy to implement and execute......HP, CPQ, and IBM arestarting to do it....Dell's days of advantage are numbered....

Conclusion: It is not enough to thoroughly understand Dell's model, or to be in a position to imitate it.....Dell's advantage(s) are simply too great, and they keep pushing the envelope to make them even greater .........Question: Where does this put competitors who do not even have a direct model and/or the ability to come close to emulating Dell's operations......In more trouble then Micron, I concur....

Actions like Kirschner's make me feel awfully good about Dell's future!

I expect that within two years Dell will displace Compaq as the #1 computer manufacturer.

You think it will take that long? I don't - of course the NT release dates will have an impact. Dell is going to make a lot of money on the server product line... we haven't seen too much of that in the numbers yet because we are still waiting for the new sql server.

Chuzzlewit, I think DELL will pass CPQ as the #1 worldwide PC maker within a year. The real question is how long will it take for DELL to overtake CPQ in the enterprise and storage businesses?

LoD

Chuzz....I'm back, the King of Worriers.

I would like to ask your opinion of something that we, as DELL and other quality stockholders, may or may not be ignoring these days, and that is the possible deflationary cycle of corporate/economic America...There is nothing I want to believe in more than for the Bull Market to get over it's hiccups and continue onward and upward......However, I am becoming increasingly concerned over the world-wide economic picture and how it might affect the U.S. equities markets....I am particularly concerned about how a declining corporate earnings picture, compounded by a Y2K-fear and/or reality induced market sell-off sometime next year, might affect the stock price of top quality stocks like DELL, as well as other excellent companies like CSCO,MSFT, and AOL.

What do you think?....Will earnings be the ONLY measure by which companies that continue to grow profits be assigned a market value....OR, even if company earnings continue to grow in a very negative overall economic climate, do you envision a picture of a DELL, a MSFT, an AOL, a CSCO, etc. etc. losing a sizeable bite out of their stock price?..If the answer is yes, there would be price loss, how much would you guess?

I guesss the bottom line I'm working on is this:.....Any idea how a significant, prolonged Bear Market could affect DELL (and other quality companies)?

Thank you in advance.

Regards, George
