To Bernard: Thanks for your "take" on the great blimp caper. Only question is whether there will be no rpt no customers. If the target is high speed data in urban areas and the technology works well, it is difficult to maintain the idea that no one will use the service because the market will be dried up by other alternatives. Often in competing technologies some niches are practical despite alternatives, no? Maybe there will be a limited market (and maybe not) but zero - doubt that. All of this is on the somewhat heroic assumption that the system actually works - and works well. There is certainly plenty of room for skepticism re that. Respect. Chaz

Bernard, I think your remarks on SS are well reasoned and compelling; I wonder to what extent they apply to Teledesic and/or Skybridge? I know (well, I'm pretty sure) that G*, et. al. don't rely on urban users (until they roam outside urban areas) and that the market demand for rural roaming phones is well in excess of planned capacity of G* and its competitors.

It seems to me that the case for broadband is not so clear cut. Surely there's a lot less demand out in the sticks for that capability and the price tag for providing the service via satellite is a lot higher (3-5 X what G* cost by all estimates).

I wonder to what extent TDesic and Skybridge take into account competition from non-space based service providers?
