All: Data General offering 4-Way XEON servers joey Data General To Introduce Xeon-based Servers (08/10/98; 11:13 a.m. ET) By Mitch Wagner, InternetWeek Data General plans Monday to unveil a four-way Xeon-based PC server designed for supporting Windows-terminal applications as well as databases, online transaction processing, and Internet applications. The AViiON AV3700 tower and AV3700R rack-mounted system runs one to four Xeon processors at 400 MHz with 512 kilobytes or 1 megabyte of cache. It has up to four gigabytes of extended data-out dual in-line memory module memory, six internal bays supporting up to 54 GB of storage, and external storage up to 4 terabytes. The system will be available within 30 days. It has six Peripheral Component Interconnect slots and one shared PCI/Extended Industry Standard Architecture slot. A tower configuration will have an estimated street price starting at $7,500, with a rack-mount version starting at $8,000. The system includes a single processor with 512 KB of cache and no storage. The AViiON has a 10/100 Ethernet card and hot-pluggable power supplies. A modem is bundled with the system, and, in case of problems, the system will automatically dial out for help to a Data General (company profile) service center. The PC server is available in cluster configurations. Also for high availability, the system features component de-configuration. If a processor or memory chip goes bad, the PC will isolate the bad component, automatically reboot, and go back online with the bad component isolated. Many PC server and workstation vendors are supporting the Xeon chip, which Santa Clara, Calif.-based Intel announced last month and was delayed for several weeks because of bugs. Intel said it has resolved the problems. Dell and Compaq have already started shipping their Xeon servers.
