Hindsight's 20-20, As British Telecom Cashes Out Of MCI
By SHAWN YOUNG
Dow Jones Newswires

NEW YORK -- Seven billion dollars in cash really soothes the sting of what might have been. Even if, theoretically, what might have been is almost $9 billion.

British Telecommunications PLC (BTY), having lost merger partner MCI Communications Corp. (MCIC) to WorldCom Inc. (WCOM), agreed last fall to sell its 20% stake in MCI to WorldCom for about $7 billion in cash. But given the rise in WorldCom's shares since then, British Telecom will get less than other MCI investors, who will get WorldCom stock when the merger closes later this summer.
