I am no longer long Pair but this is indeed interesting. This ownership certainly fits the pattern preceding of another buyout I have held. The obvious question is what other reason would a French insurance firm have for 20% ownership?

Rain,

As you know Alcatel has bid roughly $4.2 billion in stock to acquire DSC Communications. This is expected to be finalized in early October.

According to Value Line: "ALA's objective is to strengthen its presence in the US telecommunications equipment market. DSC's forte--providing switching products stateside to large customers such as MCI and Ameritech--seem a logical fit with ALA's expertise in transmission and broadband technology."

VL adds: "Having completed a public offering of 52% of its energy joint venture with GE PLC, Alcatel plans to concentrate on telecommunications. ALA's share of the proceeds of the IPO of Alstom , about 1.85 billion, could help finance additional telecom-related acquisitions." (emphasis added)
