I notice you are on the Psft thread also. Have you seen any references in any research on the business strategy of Psft v Sap.

I think its interesting that Sap is employing a "build everything" approach, similar to msft. Of course Sap has to do this because it suits their architecture but for whatever reason thats their game. It certainly worked for msft.

Otoh, Psft has an acquisitions strategy, similar to Csco. The advantage there is that you can adopt new technologies more quickly (but you have to have a good strategic planning team). Of course there are the integration issues, cultural issues etc.

I would absolutely love to see 2 like-size companies with these 2 distinctly different approaches duel it out in the marketplace (where both mgmt teams are fairly adept). Unfortunately Sap is so much larger than Psft its not really a fair game. Otoh, if Psft starts to gain on Sap then that will be fairly strong evidence that acquisitions win long term.
