A new wrinkle to on-line book and music competition?

OK, we have seen dramatic increases in just the past several days in the awareness of Shop Bots, on-line directories, free e-mail service and the like. New sites that offer these services are cropping up weekly if not daily.

What if a major volume portal, such as Lycos started offering a service to their millions of clients to match up buyers and sellers of used books? If you are like me, you have piles of both old and recent but read and done with books collecting dust or soon headed for the goodwill truck. What if you could enter your books ISB number or title and find a match for others with similar interests or books by the same authors who want to swap or sell them? You could sell your books outright for 1/3-1/2 the original price. This would make sense for computer, hard-cover and other expensive books books but might also make sense for 2 or more less expensive books. Then the value of "community building" in which you read the reader reviews about a title and then decide to buy or swap from someone who is finished with it makes about as much sense as the other justifications for e-commerce we have seen (and has been used to justify AMZN's high price).

Of course, you can extend this shop/swap community out to other things besides books but books or music CDs are ideal because they tend to wear well.

Maybe the future of e-commerce is a lot more economical (and greener) than Amazon.con's price indicates.
