A lot of misinformation about CD owning Howard Johnson, Avis, etc. in the same way Hilton owns its hotels. CD owns the brand name and franchises the right to use that name in exchange for a fee and a percentage of the revenues. They also handles the centralize reservations for the franchisees and own the customer lists.

BTW, there is currently a glut in the hotel business.
