Paul/All,

We all have heard of INTC chip shortages in the US, then Canada, and now Europe. Compaq comes out yesterday and says server demand will outstrip supply. All anecdotal evidence points to a surge in demand for high end chips. Could the Y2K factor be at play here? Here is another piece of the puzzle to mull over:

What about the scenario that many pointed out but many also poo-pooed: the fact that companies may upgrade instead of debug? Looks like this may in fact be coming to fruition, although it is certainly too soon to tell.

Paul,
"Perhaps it is possible that Intel has received excessive orders and demand for their product that outstrips their current inventory and short term production capability."

Yes but is it due to a production problem resulting in low inventory or excess demand above normal?

Paul,

Re: shortages

The problem with JIT (just in time) inventory planning which many of Intel's customers have transitioned to (and which initially caused Intel much pain as things cleared out) is that if your forecasting ability isn't very precise it can turn into AIT (almost in time inventory) <ggg>.

Don't know if that's what happened here but it well could be.
