Here's a nice, negative little article:

Excerpt:

Bankers Trust Alex. Brown analyst Byron Walker believes more bad news may be in store from Applied Materials, in the form of a loss in the fourth quarter. Walker points out that in order to prevent reporting a third-quarter loss, the company utilized a significant portion of its backlog, or orders that haven't been shipped. The company's backlog fell to $1 billion in the third quarter, from $1.4 billion at the end of the second quarter.

In order to avoid a loss, Walker says, the company would have to radically lower costs as well as utilize additional backlog. "Applied's size makes rapid changes in cost and expense structure difficult. We believe Applied could report an operating loss in its fourth-quarter," Walker said.
