I believe the comparison is valid:
1) Same industry
2) Unconfirmable FOREIGN agreements
3) Integration problems. i.e. Worldwide Direct merger.
4) Outlandish predictions. i.e. $20 billion by the year 2000

One difference is that SMTK was much further in their business
plan before the problems were uncovered. If DGIV's problems
are brought to light comparatively early, then the number
of financial casualties can be kept down, and a class action
suit can be avoided or at least the number of participants
minimized.
