That's how many orders Apple has received for iMac computers.

In just one week.

"In my 20 years of computer retailing, I have never seen
consumers place advance orders in such record volume. ... It's
causing a frenzy in the consumer market." (Tom Jacobs, CEO and
president of Computer Town)

"We've never seen this type of excitement from our customers
surrounding a new PC--they can't wait to get their hands on an
iMac this weekend." (Jim Halpin, CompUSA president and CEO)

If you can't wait to get your hands on an iMac, we've got good news.

In just 4 days, you'll find iMac computers in retail and campus
resellers all over the country. And many of those dealers plan
special celebrations to make iMac feel especially welcome.

Come join the celebrations. You'll find a dealer in your area on our
web site:

See ya there.

What's thrown a wrench in the robots' equilibrium?

If you hear Apple's new radio commercials, you'll know. But in case
the ads are not playing in your area, you can listen to them on
Apple's web site. Just look under the calendar and click on the
speaker icon to start the QuickTime audio clip.

We'll be changing them each day, so come back often and listen in:

* A Letter to the Editor *
--------------------------

Dear Editor of iMac Update:

As I was removing a 40-pound bag of kibble from the back seat of my
Miata (I own a Great Dane, don't you know), I got to thinking,

"Just how much does an iMac weigh?"

I can manage a kibble bag, even one that my Princess starts to pull
apart at the seams, so even if the iMac were to weigh 40 lbs or so,
I could manage it just fine. It would be even easier, of course, if
it had itself a handle. Does it have a handle?

Going Mobile in Detroit

****************
Dear Mobile,

Thanks so much for that nice picture of Princess. She's quite lovely
and certainly seems to enjoy playing with that bag of kibble.

Anyway, you'll be pleased to know that iMac weighs just 38.1 pounds
(17.3 kg) and does indeed have its own built-in handle. The handle
makes it easy for just about anyone, even someone who doesn't own a
Great Dane like yourself, to take iMac out of the box and carry it
to the location where you'd like to use it.

In fact, thanks to its compact, all-in-one design, iMac moves from
one location to another quite easily. And it will fit in even tight
quarters as iMac is just 15.8" (39.5 cm) high, 15.2" (38 cm) wide,
and 17.6" (44.0 cm) deep.

<<I'm sure they will set up a demo machine (iMac) which will lead to
more preorders and when more machines come in the next week>>

Even better, I think that if they (CompUSA for example) should position the iMac on the end of the Mac aisle facing the PC aisle and have it running Windows 95 or 98.

REASON: stimulate spillover interest from PC shoppers to look at the Macs.
