A naked short is different that a declared short. A declared short means that they borrowed shares from someone and sold them, later to replace them.

A naked short means that they sell stock that they don't have, and short "imaginary" shares. Meaning the share they shorted did not exist.

Sooner or later those shares have to be covered, too. What the time limit is I am unsure of.

As far as I know, only a market maker can short naked.

We have people posting on this thread that are experts on this, so maybe they will comment.
