3Com Up 9.6%; Acquisition Rumor Cited By MARK BOSLET Dow Jones Newswires PALO ALTO, Calif., -- 3Com Corp. (COMS) shares rose 9.6% on a rumor that chip giant Intel Corp. (INTC) was interested in buying the company, market sources said. Analysts, however, said they believed a combination of the two companies was unlikely. A 3Com spokesman declined to comment on the rumor. An Intel spokesman couldn't immediately be reached. Analysts questioned whether the two companies' businesses would make a good fit. Intel's main line of business is computer chips, though it has signaled its desire to expand into networking equipment. Nevertheless, Intel already makes adapter cards and for that reason probably wouldn't be interested in 3Com's adapter card operations. 3Com also has modem operations that analysts say Intel might not find interesting. 3Com shares rose 2 5/8 to 30 on Nasdaq volume of 13.6 million. Average daily volume is 7.5 million. Intel shares rose 1 1/16, or 1.3%, to 85 5/8. -By Mark Boslet; 650-496-1366
