Out of curiosity, what time frame would you consider to be useful? Let's see... stocksheet.com gives a 36 month beta of 0.87. Is that more to your liking? Perhaps you would prefer shorter still? One year? Market Edge gives a beta of 1.04 for that period.

The beta is used to calculate the hedge ratio, also in the portfolio theory. I watch volatility because it tends to reach extremes at major turning points but pay no attention to beta. The rule of thumb is that the lookback period for any market statistics is a function of the holding period.

That said, when a company like WCOM bids on MCIC, company 2.5 times its size, it alters WCOM statistics to a point of rendering them obsolete.
