I'm thinking that if Amazon is up 4 this morning on only 800,000 shares, the shorts are in trouble.

It's clear that fundamentals aren't driving AMZN - its mostly momentum driven. If that's the case, then "what goes up will come down" as hot air without something real to generate it doesn't hold up the balloon for long.

Behind the hot air is the story of this concept stock. Amazon, the successful pioneer of on-line book selling and one of the most effective marketers on the internet is envisioned to expand into bold new markets and increase sales dramatically. OK, let's say that Amazon does expand into sales of many other things. The company has so far proven only that it can generate increasing losses from executing on that dream. Expected losses have widened greatly as the company has announced recent acquisitions and plans and they have warned that margins will be lower and expenses higher in the future. But let's suppose that there is an end-game that results in modest profits in four years - better than currently forecast. Does that make AMZN worth 120 today or is this similar to what drove the bio-tech stocks?
