Jbn,

I think that the more DELL trades sidelines within this range (105-111), the better chance that it will find support above 100 when the market sinks more. Actually, I believe that it will not be healthy for this stock if it makes a substantial rally before we get to see the numbers.

I think that they will come with 0.48-0.49. I have correctly predicted their numbers for three quarters in a row and think that my number will be hit. Right now I am not betting too much on a split due to the gloomy market environment. However, CSCO did issue a split, so...

Anyway, my best take is that DELL trade sideline for 8 weeks assuming no split and run toward 135 for the Nov. earning report. DELL will have to split its stock by then.

It's nice to see Softie holds so well today. Besides DELL, this baby is co-number two on my buy list with LU.

good luck,
larry!

Good morning Bachman,

A few thoughts on whisper numbers are in order, I think. First, the whisper number is really the consensus estimate of all of us who either own Dell, are short Dell, or who contemplate a position in Dell. It is our collective expectation. So talking about a whisper number is really an exercise in futility because we won't know until after earnings are announced what the whisper number is (and then only inferentially).

So, does David believe that people who publish "wishful thinking" type numbers have the ability to move markets?

TTFN,
CTC

IYO, what are "outrageous estimates"?

I know people do do a lot of work and I just post up the consensus estimate +- 1c. Last time I put up the consensus estimate and it came in 1 above if I remember well. I was a lot closer than the mean of posters on the thread. This time I put up 1c below because I can't help being bearish.

There is a similar situation in econometrics that the big theoretical econometric models often don't work very well at forecasting the economy compared to simple time series models.

So maybe my provocative use of language is uncalled for. I apologize.

Again, I see that DELL is a great company the best in the industry. But that still can't justify the enormous runup in price in the last year or two.
