Whisper Numbers, again

Chuz,

I don't have any idea what David S. thinks, because he has not responded to my questions yet. We may infer that he is short from his posts, but he hasn't said anything concrete.

Your concept of whisper number sounds intuitively correct. When we, the market public, have a fixed concept of what earnings will be, and the company beats, meets, or fails to meet our expectations, we react and the stock moves accordingly.

DELL has no problem in beating analyst projections. It is our expectations that they can never beat. Long term, I believe it to be one of the best and most solid investments available. Short term, it may tank because of market uncertainties, and because we raised the bar too high.

DELLish, 3.

CTC, the whisper number doesn't come from SI Dell thread.

It comes from the market traders and establish it as a tool to determine if the earnings are good enough to buy or to sell the stock.

I would challenge anyone to predict the Dell whisper number from the Dell thread estimates. I would also challenge anyone to show how to calculate the whisper number from Dell estimates for previous quarters.

There are many trash whisper numbers out there by people trying to push the stock price.

CNBC and Briefing.com have been reliable in the past and we will have that info the morning of the 18th.

Pat

Chuzzlewit, the influence "whisper numbers" have is to inflate the perceptions of analysts who then publish their egotistical predictions as the standard of expectation.

The stock that "fails" to hit the whisper drops and gets bad press.

A few years ago a young girl who performed brilliantly in winning a athletic championship was challenged by a pot-bellied bellicose broadcaster: "So what do you have to improve on?" When she answered: "I did my best" it incensed him and he continued to hound her, everything can be improved upon, etc, etc. Disgusting!
He was simply jealous of her skill. His breed is a numerous nation.

Some people are never satisfied. A fellow's mother-in-law gave him two neckties so he took her and his wife to dinner, wearing one, of course. She pounced: "What's the matter with the other one?"

Regards,

Don
