FULL TEXT - George Soros statement on Russia

NEW YORK, Aug 13 (Reuters) - The following is the full text of a statement issued by international financier George Soros to news agencies on Thursday afternoon.

Earlier Thursday, Soros wrote a letter to the editor of the British newspaper the Financial Times, calling on Russia to devalue its currency and suggested the introduction of a currency pegged to the dollar or euro.

The statement was made available to Reuters.

''The turmoil in Russian financial markets is not due to anything I said or did. We have no short position in the rouble and have no intention of shorting the currency. In fact, our portfolio would be hurt by any devaluation.

''The purpose of my letter to the Financial Times was to issue a wake-up call to the G7 governments. While the Russian government is doing everything in its power to cope with the situation, it cannot succeed without further assistance from abroad.''
