Thirsty for recognition... Nbase at the bottom of page. Hanging around good company Galileo Technology Announces Low-Cost GalNet-II Family Members Business Wire - August 17, 1998 09:18 SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 17, 1998-- Newest Members of the GalNet-II Family Extend Galileo's Price/Performance Leadership in 10/100Mbps Ethernet Switch Devices Galileo Technology, (Nasdaq: GALTF) the industry leader in merchant Fast Ethernet switching silicon, today announced two new devices aimed at providing the lowest bill-of-materials costs for unmanaged Fast Ethernet switch products. The GT-48301, a GalNet-II(TM) crossbar switch offers almost 10Gbps of "backplane" switching performance at $35; the GT-48313 supports development of 8-port unmanaged Ethernet switches at costs approaching $10/port for silicon components. "Less than a month ago we introduced our GalNet-II family of switched Ethernet Controllers providing the industry's most modular and scalable solution for Ethernet switching applications," said Barry Gray, Galileo's director of marketing. "Our announcement today of the GT-48301 and GT-48313 represent the second chapter of our GalNet-II product roll-out. You can expect to see regular announcements of new GalNet-II products through the coming year supporting further improvements in performance and reductions in per-port pricing." "The key to winning in today's market is to have a complete set of core building blocks available to combine into the right end product, with incredibly short time-to-market to capture early market share," Gray continued. "GalNet-II fully supports this concept by providing the industry's widest array of product offerings in Ethernet switches. The GT-48301 and GT-48313 extend this lead by directly addressing the low-cost unmanaged Fast Ethernet switch market segment." Fast Ethernet Switch Solution Approaching $10/Port for Major Silicon Components Galileo's new GT-48313 Fast Ethernet Switch Controller integrates eight 10/100 Ethernet ports and a full wire-speed switching engine into a single, low-cost device. Priced at just $50 in 10,000 unit quantities, this device combined with external physical layer devices and memory support the industry's lowest cost bill-of-materials for 8-port unmanaged Fast Ethernet switches. "Based on the GT-48313, an OEM can quickly create a wire-speed Fast Ethernet switch selling for less than $75/port," stated Mr. Gray. "This new price/performance point will further accelerate the shift away from shared Ethernet hubs to desktop Ethernet switching." Low-Cost Crossbar for Higher Port Count Switches The new GT-48301 G.Link Crossbar is a cost-reduced crossbar device for use with Galileo's recently announced GT-48312 8-port Fast Ethernet Switch Controller. The GT-48301 provides four G.Link ports for 9.6 gigabits/sec of crossbar switching between GalNet-II switch controllers. The GT-48301 is aimed at unmanaged 24- and 32-port Fast/Gigabit Ethernet switches. Priced at $35 in 10,000 unit quantities, the GT-48301 is approximately 2/3 the cost of the GT-48300. The combination of the GT-48301 crossbar and four GT-48312 Unmanaged Fast Ethernet Switch Controllers enables OEMs to build high-performance 24-port unmanaged Fast Ethernet switches at switch-silicon costs below $9 per port. "Customers are able to get into volume production in only 3-6 months using GalNet-II," continued Mr. Gray. "Combined with our GT-48320 Gigabit Ethernet controller they will be able to quickly build and market 24+1, 16+2, and high-performance 4-port pure Gigabit Ethernet switches in these same time frames." Product Availability Production quantities of the GT-48313 are available now. The GT-48301 crossbar device will be sampling in August with production in November.
