Malko:

IMO I think you hit it on the head...that these are trades between MMs.

Now the question is why?

Are they trying to stir interest in the share price by creating
artificial volume by churning shares? Is this in conjunction with
interest they think will be generated by p2 release?

Who knows? Who knows if there is any rational to any of this volume?

BB trading, in general, is weird!

Sometimes MMs do these tricks to create disinterest in buyers. For eg., If there is a buyer out there for 50K shares, MMs job is to catch the trade and if an MM does not have enough shares he will short sell 50k shares and give those to buyer. In other words, both buy & sell of 50k shares took place and hence no movement in the stock price.
MMs would love to do these tricks on stocks that have considerable short position(s) and also by doing trades like these, they feel that they can buy back shares at cheaper prices. Their oblective is to EXECUTE a trade in whatever manner they can.
This way MMs keep shorting the stock to execute the buy trades. However , If buying interest increases, they will have no other go but to cover the shares they shorted so far. That's why we see HUGE RUNUPs all of a suuden, especially true with stocks that have high short positions.
