Tom, thread....

Just thought I'd give you an update on the Offshore Drilling Bits AIM portfolio. Well.... the news is not good. Looks like I started out with too low a cash level (25%) and hit a huge downdraft. Wow! I've been sucking fumes with no cash to spend for this entire week and had one stock in the portfolio drop 17% today. It is ugly out there in the oil patch.

It appears that I violated the rules a bit by buying, then setting the next target buy level without the "pause" suggested in the book. This "pause" would have allowed me to buy at better prices than would have been indicated because the sector is in freefall at this point. I knew the pause was there for just such a circumstance, but I honestly thought the sector would not continue to drop this fast or this far. Duh!

So for right now the 5 stock AIM portfolio is down a whopping 38% in 5 weeks. The only good news is these companies are not going to go broke, so eventually reason will prevail and the prices will once again rise. May take quite some time however.

Hi Tom,
Who woulda thunk it? I finally got a nice buy In Dupont. 24% added to my account at a nice dividend yield. More and more I am convinced that Mr. L had the right idea when he recommended the higher quality issues and patience.
You've done with them but I look at some of the other guys' experience with the four letter stocks and it's really scary. I'm not too worried about DD coming back. APCC has been a good one for me too.
I also got a 7% buy on HRP. It;s currently paying 9.32%. I think I'll throw that in with bond funds for the income portion and use the proceeds to take an extra trip or two per year.
I've still got plenty of cash in both AIM accounts. Boy does that feel good now.
Lots of luck
Bernie

To Tom / any other AIMers -

Subject: DRIPs and AIM

Since holding down commissions and fees is a major goal, I was wondering if DRIPS could be used in conjunction with AIM. I doubt if they could, since DRIPS have a lag-time between the time the check is mailed to the company/transfer agent and time the buy/sell actually takes place. Boy, but wouldn't it be nice if they could be used !

Anyone out there familiar with DRIPs who may know of a way around this problem ? (I'm sure its just wishful think on my part)

Thanks, $$hungry.

Tom,

Thanks for your response. It's quite helpful.
At the risk for displaying my ignorance, should I have known about the <<Shift-F4>> command to find port. control? I don't recall getting a manual with Newport, but then again I'm not real diligent about reading "Read Me" files that come with s/w (While I fully appreciate the cost, space and tree savings of online manuals, I'm from the old school of computing and prefer real vs. virtual manuals). Or is it your close association with Mr. Norman that gives you these insights into Newport's inner workings?
