In reality, this appears to be fine tuning. Adaptec got the "expansion by acquisition" blues in having acquired too many peripheral product lines, employees, etc. through its multiple acquisitions. As long as they're keeping the best people, and planning to grow in the areas of their strengths (and of the highest potential growth markets) this is in my mind a positive, not a negative. I'm not technically oriented enough, though, to know whether this is a core technology for them or a peripheral company. Anybody with insight here?

Charles: Thanks. Very interesting development, I think. It suggests two things to me.

One, an adjustment to the storage area of the business because of the failed Symbios deal. Symbios actually makes hard drives along with its SCSI and other devices. And Adaptec bought Ridge, which specializes in storage solutions, after Symbios was on the platter. And it named Bob Graham--CEO of Ridge--president of the Storage Systems Division at Adaptec. Looked like Adaptec was adjusting its focus to accommodate an expected acquisition of Symbios. Now that that is off the books, it can cut back on the work force.

Two, a return to the core business of Adaptec, with the return of Boucher and Adler.

Just a few thoughts after a glass of wine.

Starow.
