Howdy Grant,
I was just daydreamin about payin taxes on a windfall, and 1996 was the last year I received a 1040 booklet from the IRS, which is where I found those figures. The fine people at H&R Block have taken over my tax paying duties, as I feel like my head will explode sometimes. Which makes finding a comfortable hat a tad difficult, trying to cover the hole in my head <G>.
One piece of information I would like to pass along, is that a person who retires after a big score in the stock market, can list "retired" as their occupation on the 1040, regardless of their age. Someone at work told me that the IRS might require "stock trader" as an occupation, meaning a person would still be responsible for paying social security taxes. Once again, the fine people at H&R Block said "retired" is sufficient.
