How is Microsoft going to be entering rough waters?

They are:

1. A monopoly.
2. Going to come out of the goverment lawsuit pretty much unscathed.
3. Coming out with NT5 next year.
4. Going to surpass Yahoo soon on hits/day.
5. Still adding billions per quarter to their already immense 14 billion pile of cash. (Bill's Money Bin)
6. Coming out with SQL7 soon (Oracle killer?)
7. Coming out with Office 2000 soon.
8. Constantly adding new products to their lineup, whether it be tools, games, web sites, etc...

Where's the 'rough water'?? They are the most important company on the planet.

Joe S.

Cheryl -
Something tells me MSFT, as a company, has topped-out

Kind of strange comment coming from a SUNW fan - looking at the 10 year chart, Mr. Softie seems to be on a pretty much linear trajectory against the log chart. SUNW sat flat for about 5 years, took a step function up with the JAVA hype, and has been pretty much flat since. Looks a lot more like SUNW is 'topped out' to me. I'll stick with softie. Shall we compare notes again in 6 months or a year and see what return an investment in each of these vehicles would have gotten?

<Thanks, Norm, for your illuminating post. This won't
be the first time Reg has been aced by a combination
of solid data and common sense. Judging by his
hard-headedness, it won't be the last either.>

Quiet Cheryl. Intel has performed quite well for me. I never said Intel has a 100% gain. Reading comprehension is fundamental to investing, so you and Norm should attempt to get a stronger grasp on the comprehension portion.

<(no investment advice intended)>

It appears none was offered.

It's possible that there are still some slow-learners
out there in investment-land who will continue to buy
because of its brand-name. But if I were long on
MSFT, I would sell now while the gettin's good. They're
going into some rough waters in the next 36-48 months.

Yes, I'd much rather own stock in a company like SUNW who's OS is selling so well that they have to start giving it away to non-commercial users.
