There have been a couple of occasions recently when Datek has rejected my order. The second time I went to short FIBRD and EASTE when it was over 13 (curses) and TRBD the day Asensio issued his sell rec. Interestingly, people at Etrade were getting TRBD that day. Both EASTE and TRBD have since been allowed. KTEL and AMZN seem to be on the restricted list permanently. All in all I still think Datek is the best for finding shorts. I'd suggest you spend some time and read the SI thread, there are other problems to of which to be aware. I wouldn't recommend Datek as your only broker, but I would recommend that you have a Datek account.

>> E*Crap won't let me sell VINF short. I put in a limit sell short today and it came back, "you can't short this stock." <<

Easy there, Dr. Seuss. No need to make hasty decisions. I'm sure there are times when E*Trade won't short you certain stocks and Datek will. Conversely, there are times when E*Trade will short you stocks that Datek won't. KTEL is an example. I'm not aware of any Datek customers being able to get KTEL shares to short in the last couple months. E*Trade couldn't find me KTEL shares until it had dropped to 25 (post split), and then could only get me 500 shares. But ever since it hit 15 or so I get all that I ask for. E*Trade has never had a problem getting me as many shares of ZITL that I want either. I know that other people were having trouble getting ZITL shares with their brokers on the same day I got some from E*Trade.

My advice would be to maybe keep the E*Trade acct open and open a Datek one as well. If anything, just keep the E*Trade acct open and take most of the money out. It's always a pain to re-open an acct. You can't expect every broker to be perfect, and if you split your funds between 2 you can probably get most of the shares you want to borrow.

VINF cannot be shorted at trade because its marked as a non-marginable stock. I used to complain about not being able to borrow stock at etrade, but not anymore. They always seem to have the latest hype stock on hand. Like KTEL CFON FAXX

VINF is an Individual Investor Magic 25 pick for 1998, according to the thread header:

Subject 18433

Three analysts follow it, all with a strong buy rating, it ranks 2nd out of 24 in its industry, it's a little pricy, but nil short interest:

biz.yahoo.com

OTOH, although no recent sales, the questionable Sirrom Capital has been selling the daylights out of the stock:

biz.yahoo.com

THey have increasing revenues, but somehow they translated an positive net income total to a negative net income per share (I have not looked very hard at this, but if anyone can explain how this is possible, I'd appreciate it), but some fairly significant increase in shares from last year:

biz.yahoo.com

At first glance (a cursory glance), it doesn't look that overdone. It is not a scam, VISTA database has been available for some time now, I think on LEXIS. Stock Genie just might need a non-P&D stock in its portfolio, and I'd only short it if it got a huge pop as a result of the SG coverage that is not sustainable.
