The practice of Sati, was very wrong and I suspect it was codified and institutionalized by a group of jealous men, who did not want the widows married again. Leaving Sati optional for the women was also very wrong. We should be thankful to the British for abolishing the practice.
There are very many instances where women held high positions throughout the history of India.

Tommy Hilfiger: Ad: Sexual High Jinks. Where is the stain remover? Who is next to advertise on Stain Preserver (as it is a lab specimen) and another to ad on stain remover? Who is next to ad their latest framing techniques to preserve the presidential biological stains for posterity and hang the stain-frame on the wall of the future Clinton's Presidential Library? Anything goes to sell products and services.

Some excerpts:
In the new Tommy Hilfiger ad, a luscious young woman with cascading hair, pouty mouth, black leather pants and bare feet is curled on top of the President's desk, casting a come-hither look. The American flag is behind her.

In another shot, the babe is squatting on the blue Oval Office rug, her knees over the Presidential seal, her eager face looking up.

Scandal chic has come to Madison Avenue. Patriotism and titillation -- a winning combination to hawk backpacks and loafers.

Though a Hilfiger spokeswoman denied any connection, the ad is clearly a mischievous allusion to Monica and Bill. It is a landmark in advertising history to use the White House to conjure up an image of sexual high jinks.
