Went over to my local CompUSA (in Oxnard, CA) today around 4 PM. It was impossible to not know the iMac had arrived, all the CUSA employees were wearing iMac t-shirts and the store was decorated with iMac balloons and signs. Lots of people in the ASWIAS, I counted about 18-20 including three Macintosh Users Group (CVMUG) members. There were three iMacs on display, each had two or three people checking it out.

The CVMUG members were very helpful answering questions and telling customers all about the iMacs and Macintoshes in general. Without them the day may have been a bust because, unfortunately, there was only one salesperson to deal with all of the customers. The entire time I was there (15-20 minutes) he (the salesman) was busy with one customer/sale. While he was busy there was one man who wanted to buy a G3 mini-tower and finally had to go up to the front counter to find another salesman (he found one, so that sale was saved). There was also a young couple who wanted to buy an iMac but couldn't find anybody to help them. They stopped one CompUSA employee as he walked by, but he said he couldn't help them. They ended up waiting the entire time I was there and were looking frustrated when I left.

I asked one of the CVMUG members how things were going, he said that he had heard that there had been 25 iMacs sold at this store. He wasn't sure if that included pre-orders or if that was only today's sales. He also said he was disappointed with this CompUSA's lack of enthusiasm for the Mac, saying that for this first day of iMac sales this store should have had more than one salesman working in the ASWIAS.

Although I was disappointed with the CUSA employees and management, I was impressed with the turnout and reaction that the iMac was receiving. It bolstered my suspicion that this machine is appealing to a wider audience than just core Mac users. I overheard one customer talking about buying two or three iMacs and networking them with a Wintel PC. Another young couple came over after looking at the Wintel machines and it was obvious they were very interested in it (although she didn't like the color). There were two fathers with their sons (playing games, of course) and one mother by herself (could this computer be one that will get more women to buy?). It was getting a lot of attention from a wide variety of people.

The following are excerpts from a post (not mine) on the Motley Fool AAPL board:

iMac in Houston, TX

"I won't lie to you--it wasn't like the lemming-madness I witnessed when Windows 95 first went on sale, but the amount of
excitment I saw at the Houston CompUSA and MicroCenter stores (both have excellent Apple-Stores-Within-A-Store set-ups,
the latter always having had one since I can remember) is any indication of future sales and potential stock price increases, I'm
very pleased to be going Long on AAPL.

"Both stores had sold out their allotments of iMac's by the time I arrived (2:30pm): CompUSA saying all 90 units (the largest
number of any store I've heard of) they had were gone or pre-sold; MicroCenter didn't divulge any numbers, although I
overheard '30' once or twice. I even saw 3 sitting in the Pick-Up area as I left. Oh, the temptation to just grab one!

"Couples, families, individuals, and even elderly, friendly folk trickled in at both locations at a steady pace, and all were met by
local Apple User Group volunteers or store employee's, with all questions seemingly answered quickly."
