I would never buy another computer other than a DELL. One thing I hate is all the crap software they put on a computer, AOL, Compuserve, software you will never use, etc... When you buy a computer (brand name) from a store it is even worse.

That is there the format c:/u comes in handy. Fresh install of the OS and install your apps from there. That's my plan when I get my Dell 400 Wed.

Have you guys check out the iMac? Pretty cool man!!

ojai,

I had a terrible experience with DELL back in February with a p266 notebook I returned because it wasn't what I expected. What a PIA they were. Their sales rep was not well informed (maybe if I could figure how to trade the damn stock better, I'd give them another try <g>).

I'm independent enough with routine issues and most software stuff. I expect GTW to do at-home hardware like the 3 year agreement says they will. One of my specialties is making warranties live up to their word.

I checked the benchmarks for the PC I'm buying and GTW rated highest in a number of areas that were important to me. DELL's scores were crud...at least for DELL. the 400 has new technology in it and I imagine there are a number of different ways to implement it.

As for Micron, always too expensive or I would have bought there already. It looks like they're trying to shore up big brother's DRAM slamming.

Alan

Software / Hardware Warranty

I agree this is a significant issue. I took my Compaq computer to Fry's ( authorized Compaq Service Center ). They made me sign something that indicated I would have to pay a fee (forget how much but it was significant) if they determined that the problem was software related.

Additional warranty comments

A Fry's employee told me that the case had been opened so the warranty was void. I told him that I was instructed to do so by a Compaq service rep ( to reseat plugs). He argued with me and told me Compaq's warranty did not allow that. He said I could not install any expansion card without voiding the warranty. He said sometimes they make exceptions for RAM.

I called Compaq on another issue. The first thing the Compaq service rep told me to do was remove all non Compaq installed components.

I recall a similar situation posted on this thread regarding Micron support and third party components.

I tried to buy a DELL Win95 machine with an Appian dual monitor card. They refused indicating that they would only support Appian cards in NT.

A question for the thread (unless we have beat this one to death a la Spot's comment)

Are the DELL/Gateway/third party warranties affected if one modifies the original hardware/software configuration? Does one have to restore an original configuration before asking for warranty support?
