Jane- Many Telcos already are developing or have (NetworkMCI) their own one-number services. They have lots of money and R&D to throw at ti, and would just as soon develop it internally than have it given to them by GMGC or another competitor. That is not to say that all the services aren't courting the Telco's, they are, but I think we will either see invisible branded services: Portico not mentioned, but Bell Atlantic just having a service that looks like and sounds like portico without the Portico brand name; or we will see more companies coming out with their own one-number services ie: NetworkMCI.

Many of these carriers actually have experience with telephony services. For example AccessLine provided the systems for Ameritech and Bell Atlantic for a goodly time, before they brought the systems in house, so these companies know what they are doing from experience.

I personally think it could go either way. I think we will see many telcos partnering with different providers for different reasons: Bell Atlantic=Portico, Bell South=StarTouch, NYNEX=Webley, etc.

This is only my personal ramblings though. I think the company that puts its pride aside and basically gives away "ownership" of the product and allows new branding etc. and new feature add-ons/subtractions will win out in the teleco fight in the end.

Humble Rambler,
JC
