to Sig Frank, and all Can anyone shed light on how whisper numbers originate? I believe there is a great opportunity for collusive mendacity here.
Does one analyst sit down and call up a group of his counterparts and take a poll and then publish this somewhere? Ostensibly, the purpose of the whisper number must be to update a 60 day or so old forecast but what's to prevent MMs from deliberately hyping the number so high that they know the stock can't meet it and then scare people into selling thier holdings by saying, "See your stock isn't so great after all. Sure it beat the First Call estimate but it didn't beat the whisper number so you see it's overpriced. You'd better sell. I could maybe take it off your hands but I don't know, etc, etc" Then they buy back the stock they've sold short. Who organizes or collates the whisper numbers on the street? How are they disseminated? why are they even necessary for legitimate (not cynical, trading) purposes? I am surprised at how little information I could find on a web search?
any thoughts. Last time Dell's earnings which were good were found to be lacking because of an inflated whisper number. At one point as I remember there was even a range of whsper numbers which is even more absurd. Which whisper do you believe? Is thre anything the small investor can do about this possibly corrupt practice?
