Steve, you said that the world looks different from your side of the ocean. What does a yuppie look like from over there? I would think even more materialistic and less sensitive, but your posts are always interesting and often in a surprising way, so I am curious.

Ireland, a country with which I am familiar, is going through economic renovation, for example. This has affected mostly Dublin, where there are more cell phones now per capita than almost anywhere. However, there has been little trickling down to the working classes, and they are getting pretty angry about it!! I suspect that Sergei-come-lately yuppies in countries with large underclasses and unstable governments could be viewed as pretty repugnant, really, although I was pretty nauseated when some of the leaders of the late 1960's revolution in America sold out, as well.

Incidentally, I do not consider Penni a yuppie, just to get my vote in on the subject. I do think there needs to be a clever abbreviation for old hippies who got lucky on the material plane of life and did not sell out, but I am not witty enough to coin one this morning.
