The current Gilder Technology Report says that "in retail channels, non-Intel processor market share in desktop PCs rose from 6% in January, 1997 to 36% in January, 1998. For instance, AMD processor PCs accounted for 45% of sub-$1,000 sales. Thus, CPQ can claim its highest margins from their sub-$1,000 PC of all their lines because of cheaper components. The iMac, however, doesn't have the comparable advantage of cheaper components ...or does it? Anyone?

"Well, One thing I tend to believe is that anybody who had preordered
his/her iMac already got it, which means 150,000 units. Did you hear
anybody with preorder hasn't gotten his/her iMac yet?"

Actually the 150K preorder as I understand it is the preorder by retailers and distributers, not customer preorders. There is a big difference. In other words that was how many units places like Macwarehouse, CompUSA, Ingram, Computerware...etc ordered from Apple between Aug 3 and Aug 10th. As you know most of them only got a fraction of their initial orders filled by Apple and have sold out those units.

It'll probably take another week or so (hopefully less) before those 150K order has been filled. We probably got a lot of new orders since Apple made that 150K announcement 7 days ago.

Customer preorder figures are interesting for determining popularity of iMac; However it is much easier to estimate the overall demand of the product by reseller/distributer orders.

As you know, trying to get tick by tick and intraday quotes on my Mac. Called a place yesterday and they don't have Mac software for it, but the saleswoman said that she had sent a memo to their CEO that very day saying she'd had more than 25 such requests and thought they should consider it. I asked that she also add me to that request list. I will buy a PC board to do this, but I would so much rather do it on a Mac! I told her that Mac users would much rather use their Macs and she said she has observed this phenomena. LOL!

If we sell a few more hundred thousand Macs, I bet I will get my quote system on a Mac.
