My take on this is not so much that we want a President who will do no wrong. Rather, the emphasis is on finding a guy who is capable of practicing discretion. Remember Gary Hart? "Catch me, bungholes!" he jeered at the press. Well they caught him, and he was marginalized. Not for having the sex, but for being blatant about it.
The first rule is: Don't get caught. See to it that nothing can stick.
Kennedy was quite the party animal. But at least he engaged brain before deploying his short-range missile. As a result it took us 30 years to find out that he boinked around behind Mrs. Camelot's back. (And who knows, maybe in front of it too.)
I think that as one statesman after the other has proven less than chaste under the microscope, the news-eating customer base has gotten a little fed up. Now we're about to CATCH one of the sunzabitches at his own game. This isn't about sex, or a blue dress, or even the subornation of perjury. This is about the first guy in the saddle who was arrogant/stupid enough to pull a Hart. And we want to pillory him for ignoring the fine print, most notably Rule One above.
