George,

Whether or not it's suicidal remains to be seen. I suspect - and hope - that in a few weeks Americans will wake up and remember that Asia is in crisis, the US economy is teetering on the brink, Russia is plunging headlong into a situation that could cause real trouble, crazy people are blowing up embassies, and the FBI has more important things to do than analyzing stains - like maybe catching a serial killer or mad bomber.

In other words, people may just see Bill's dollies as the non-issue that they would have been if we weren't a nation of hypocritical vicarious lechers, and start thinking about the real issues that will have a real impact on where this country will stand in 1, 5, or 50 years. Sorry, but the dollies are not one of those.

Steve

PS Everything Tuchman wrote is worth reading, but some are essential: every American should be forced to read "Sand Against the Wind" before speaking on the subject of China, and "A Distant Mirror" is an absolute classic - a history of a medieval century that reads like a bestselling novel. Great stuff.
