Just an FYI, The Dell model is based on a complex implementation of mfg software, supply chain mgmt automation etc. which is a proprietary solution developed and owned by only Dell.

I was looking into setting up something similar for Power Computing across the street and my estimate was a 3+ year endeavor to get the bare bones operational. This without complex logistical optimization/hub and spoke etc. (in other words a much simpler model).

I think some of Moores books skip infrastructure technologies as a topic and then people think they dont matter. Too bad for them.

Laura,

I have probably made as much $$$ DELL as half of the folks on this thread, but that doesn't change the fact that DELL's future strategic position is far from being clearly delineated. Past doesn't dictate the future, and I will continue to trade DELL options.

Regards,
Ibexx

PS: Being there first doesn't gurantee a "hall of fame" type of spot.
We all know that DELL is a fabulous cash cow, yet it remains as a box company, more vulnerable than CPQ and IBM in the long term.
