<Instead, they leave the solution of the world's most important database problem up to 22 year old Java developers at what are basically advertising carriers.>

Frightening isn't it. Getting old. But there are a LOT of these 22 year old Java developers. Java is Sun's trojan horse. It is incredibly brilliant and seductively subtle. It isn't perfect, but it is widespread. The kids developing in it don't have to worry about index structures underneath it. They don't have to worry about tablespaces or directory structures. The 'old' guys get to stick around to manage those. These kids, these IT newbies, aren't shackled with the real world issues we confronted in building large scale systems for the past 20 years, so they can take new approaches. Do they have your fundamental understanding - no. Will they ever have it -- no. Will their success require it -- no. Should they spend some time with you to avoid some missteps on their way to glory -- I hope so.

Not to long ago we were a bunch of 22 year old kids playing with C and a bunch of lousy CODASYL databases too. Cullinet, oh Cullinet, where have you gone...
