Jim you 'touted' yourself as a broker of sorts or so it has been understood, now have you any clients or more importantly if you do,do they make any money??? In any event thanks for providing the much needed entertainment on the thread with never ending contradictory arguments, though baseless and ludicrous [or could it be ridiculous, never could figure that one out] it might be.

Jim, I would agree that Compaq holding shipments in the last weeks of their quarter does present a potential perception problem for DELL. However, the basis for DELL's rally is not attributable to that (mostly). I think earnings, and growth of revenues, tied to the stock split are the primary reasons for the rally. It is not a question of if DELL will be No. 1, but when. I think that Michael just likes to rub it in the faces of "the boys down in Houston".

Poor EP is going to be able to trumpet Compaq as No. 1, again, for only a very short time. He might do better to just lay low.

As for Asia, the sequential drop does not bother me. Q2 is always the light quarter, and given the overall environment in Asia, it appears that DELL's timing (lucky or planned) is nearly perfect.

I think the real beauty of the quarter was in the better margins, which came at a time when everyone was screaming that it was impossible.

Regards,

LoD

Jim <<It is starting to look like the AP region is not going to re-accelerate soon, so this trend may (Key word here "May") continue.>>

AP region is up 4% sequentially, as you know, in a terrible environment. AP picks up in the last three months of the year on average 8%. other positives include dell's push into server market on the govt./corporate side as internet use expands/adjusts. sequential growth in servers was $88 million leaving extensive room for growth given new contracts coming on line in Q3. laptop growth sequentially at $51 million will show extensive additional strength for Q3 given Xmas season. desktops sequentially were up $271 million which leaves excellent room for growth into the Q3 (with the current rate of desktop transition the continued growth should continue sequentially into Q3). deferred revenue of $244 million is "new" to the balance sheet relative to last quarter ("warranty contracts" it states). this revenue should come online next quarter and the following (once the warranty contracts expire) which will also assist in increasing bottom line. had they included this revenue this quarter earnings could have been close to $.57 if you assume that costs relative to the "deferred revenue" were NOT included in the just past quarter; earnings would have been much higher depending on how much cost relative to the deferred revenue was also deferred.

dell's Q3 should look bright

Jim, the Isreali market is expanding rapidly. depending on where Dell categorizes Isreal next quarter (if included in the Asia category) Asia numbers could be much hotter than usual. there are some hot spots relative to technology; not all Asia is drooping. Isreal is considered the "silicon valley of Europe", i'm told now. your assumption that europe was flat is a function of which countries are included in which region and when. dell has the option of recategorizing any country in any regional category, as does any company for that matter. just another method of giving the bear's a headache.
