Paul, A commodity is what you cannot tell apart from other commodities once it is in a product, unpacked etc.
Salt, sulphur, gasoline etc all fit that role. 35MM film fits that role too, no matter what Kodak or Fuji say. Where do you think Moto Photo film comes from.

Intel was in danger of total commoditisation and even inferiority on the Pentium series with the K6-3D so they have a new and unique package and are trying to protect it that way. It is a desperate measure IMO.
