Tokyo, Japan, March 30, 1998 .. LSI Logic Corporation today announced that it will supply SONY Corporation with a single-chip DVD decoding engine for SONY's recently announced second-generation DVD video players, the DVPS501D and DVP-M30, which are being launched in Japan this spring.

Movie fans who've flocked to "Titanic" again and again may one day be able to experience the Oscar-winning blockbuster in a whole new way, thanks to a chip from LSI Logic.

The LSI Logic L64020 DVD decoding engine integrates all the key DVD player functions into a single device. The chip integrates more than two million transistors and 45 memories, combining more than nine discrete chips on a single package.

The LSI DVD decoder chip includes an MPEG-2 audio/video decoder, along with Dolby Digital and Linear PCM audio decoders and sub-picture units (SPUs). The combination of these elements provide the highest quality video and audio performance available and offer customers a variety of advanced playback modes, including picture search, freeze frame, frame advance, frame reverse, and variable-speed play. Other advanced features that are also supported include on-screen menus, multi-camera angle, zoom and pan-and- scan functions. Consumer requirements such as VCD backward compatibility are also supported.

"We are delighted that SONY has chosen our single-chip DVD decoding engine," said Elie Antoun, executive vice president of consumer products at LSI Logic. "SONY is truly the leading innovator in consumer electronics and has become the industry leader in DVD video by producing the world's finest quality DVD players."
