In general I believe you are correct - Libertarians generally dont align themselves with the Dems. But this recent set of elections some studies showed more support for the Dems from the Libertarians. I believe the reasons were:
- Clinton viewed as a moderate Dem (vs. tax and spend)
- Recent Republican heavy focus on family values, etc (social engr)
- Recent Rebublican alliances with a vocal Christian Coalition
- Overall apathy

I think those were the results - this was a study I recall after the election.

I voted Libertarian because of the party's pro-liberty, free trade, fair taxation, centrist-leaning platform.

Clinton exhibited these values in his first term. He also espoused a balanced budget through fiscal constraint unlike his predecessors.

It will probably be several more elections before the Libertarians can create enough public awareness to win, hence I voted for the man who reflected my views and could win an election.

"Recent Republican heavy focus on family values, etc (social engr)"

I also voted against the Republicans because of the Stalin-like attempts to censure free speech and free choice (Books, Art and Abortion).

Although I am not an advocate of abortion I will fight to the death to maintain a woman's right to chose.
